Systematic Literature Review Workshop [LIBRARIES x GCOE] In-Person
Workshop Overview
This 2.5-day hands-on training workshop guides GCOE faculty and graduate student researchers through the end-to-end process of conducting a protocol-driven Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using PRISMA 2020 and the TCCM framework.
The workshop covers the complete SLR workflow—from topic scoping and review-question development, protocol and eligibility criteria, and Scopus search strategy design, through screening, data extraction and coding, descriptive analysis, critical appraisal, evidence synthesis, and identification of research gaps. Participants will also be introduced to the organization and presentation of SLR findings in a systematic-review manuscript and the identification of appropriate target journals.
Designed as an output-oriented workshop, participants will work on a research topic throughout the training and progressively develop the key components and documentation needed for a reproducible systematic literature review.
Workshop Details
Date: October 12–14, 2026
Duration: 2.5 days
Time:
- Day 1: 8:30 AM–5:00 PM
- Day 2: 8:30 AM–5:00 PM
- Day 3: 8:30 AM–12:00 PM
Venue: Philippe Jones Lhuillier Conference Room, 14F Henry Sy Sr. Hall, De La Salle University, Manila
Target Participants: GCOE Faculty and Graduate Students
Slots Available: 30 participants
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the principles and key components of Systematic Literature Review, PRISMA 2020, and TCCM
- Develop TCCM-based review questions and a protocol-driven SLR search strategy
- Conduct screening, extraction, coding, and descriptive analysis using Scopus, Rayyan, Excel, and Biblioshiny
- Apply critical appraisal and TCCM-based evidence synthesis to identify research gaps
- Prepare PRISMA-compliant documentation and manuscript-ready outputs, and identify potential target journals
Three-Day Workshop Arc
Day 1 – From Research Topic to Search Strategy
Participants will refine a research topic, develop TCCM-based review questions, design an SLR protocol, establish eligibility criteria, develop keywords, and construct and document a Scopus search strategy.
Day 2 – From Search Results to Evidence Analysis
Participants will clean and screen records using Excel and Rayyan, document the study-selection process, conduct TCCM-based extraction and coding, generate descriptive analysis using Biblioshiny, and begin critical appraisal.
Day 3 – From Evidence to Manuscript-Ready Outputs
Participants will synthesize evidence using TCCM, identify research gaps, prepare tables, figures, and PRISMA documentation, organize their systematic-review manuscript, and identify potential target journals.
Tools to Be Used
- Scopus – Literature searching, retrieval, export, and target journal identification
- Rayyan – Title-and-abstract and full-text screening
- Excel – Data export, deduplication, cleaning, extraction, and coding
- Biblioshiny (R) – Descriptive analysis, including publication trends, authors, journals, and countries
Expected Outputs
By the end of the workshop, participants will have:
- A validated research topic and refined working title
- TCCM-based review questions
- Documented inclusion and exclusion criteria
- A reproducible Scopus search string
- PRISMA-S search documentation
- A cleaned and deduplicated dataset
- Completed title-and-abstract and full-text screening records
- PRISMA study-selection log and flow diagram
- TCCM-based extraction and coding table
- Biblioshiny descriptive analysis outputs
- Critical appraisal and evidence-synthesis notes
- Research-gap documentation
- Manuscript-ready tables, figures, and captions
- A systematic-review manuscript structure/draft
- A shortlist of target journals

- Luis Ezra Cruz – Digital Scholarship and Initiatives Coordinator, DLSU Libraries
Notes to Attendees
- Full attendance is expected. This is a 2.5-day, hands-on workshop with a cumulative structure. Activities build progressively from topic development and search strategy to screening, extraction, analysis, synthesis, and manuscript preparation.
- Bring a laptop. Participants will need their own laptop for Scopus searching, Rayyan screening, data cleaning, Biblioshiny activities, and preparation of their SLR outputs.
- Prepare a research topic. Participants are encouraged to come with a tentative engineering research topic or area of interest that can be developed into a systematic literature review.
- Prepare access to required tools. Participants should ensure access to Scopus and complete the installation/setup of required tools, particularly R/RStudio and Biblioshiny, before the workshop. Instructions will be provided prior to the training.
- Bring relevant literature if available. Participants may bring existing articles or references related to their proposed topic to facilitate topic scoping and initial review activities.
- Active participation is encouraged. The workshop includes hands-on exercises, screening activities, data extraction, analysis, and output preparation. Participants are expected to actively work on their own review throughout the training.
- Output-oriented workshop. Participants will progressively build the major components and documentation of a systematic literature review, culminating in manuscript-ready outputs and a shortlist of potential target journals.
