About Conversations with F. Sionil Jose
In 2016, A Dialogue with F. Sionil Jose was launched in the Libraries where National Artist for Literature F. Sionil Jose talked about the art and obscenity of fiction, and literary criticism as well as the teaching of and the symbolism of allegory in literature. This year, The Libraries is bringing back the master storyteller in Conversations with F. Sionil Jose, where he will engage the youth of today in conversations with well-known personalities on various fields like literature, art, film, and politics.
About the Speaker
National Artist for Literature and multi-awarded author F. Sionil Jose served as writer-in-residence and faculty member of De La Salle University. He is the founder of the Philippine chapter of the international organization PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists) and runs the Solidaridad Bookshop.
About the Guests
LTC SAMUEL G YUNQUE, distinguished himself, as the battalion commander of 1st Scout Ranger Battalion from March 2017 to December 2018 deployed in Lanao del Sur and Sulu Provinces. He audaciously led his men in a three-day battle in the ‘Battle of Piagapo’ that liberated the community of Brgy. Gacap, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur from ISIS-inspired terrorists’ control on 23-25 April 2017.
After a month, the most devastating and longest urban operations of the AFP, the ‘Battle of Marawi” happened, his steadfast leadership and strength of character brought out the best of his men amid facing overwhelming odds. He led the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion in rescuing of sixteen soldiers, recovered the four bodies of the soldiers KIA and the two immobilized tanks behind enemy lines in the first two weeks into the battle. The rescue operation was only the initial phase of the five-month long ‘Battle of Marawi’.
PHIL FORTUNO, Ph.D is a graduate of the Singapore Armed Forces Officer Cadet School and belonged to the class of 1995. He was a Veteran Scout Ranger officer and an advocate for Peace and Development.
Author of the best-selling novel ‘No Man Left Behind: A Story of Valor in the Battle’ of Marawi’, the book narrates and documents the rescue operation of 16 embattled soldiers behind enemy lines. It is a story of patriotism, valor, honor and sacrifice of our soldiers, ordinary Filipinos who gave all for our country and people.
Dr. Fortuno also adheres to Andres Bonifacio’s wisdom, “Bear always in mind that the true love of God is love of Country, love which is also true love of man.”
