SESSION 1: Activist of the Oppressed In-Person
By Terou Dawahnee
Terou Dawahnee is a human rights defender, recognized for her unwavering commitment to advocating for the rights, dignity, and safety of sex workers and marginalized communities in the Philippines and across the Asia-Pacific region. She is the Founder and Leader of the Philippine Sex Workers Collective, a pioneering grassroots movement that challenges stigma and violence against sex workers while promoting their empowerment through rights-based, intersectional, and inclusive organizing. Dawahnee is also the visionary behind several other transformative initiatives. She leads Huwomanity, an organization uplifting the voices and agency of women; the Society for Human and Ecological Security, which works at the nexus of human rights and environmental protection; the Queer Collective, a safe space and advocacy hub for LGBTQ+ rights; Viva Voce Convergence, which mobilizes movements for the poor, oppressed, and marginalized; and the Institute for Transformative Health Action, which champions community-based health and well-being. Dawahnee empowers young people to take a stand for justice, transparency, and democratic accountability as Co-Founder of Youth Action Against Corruption and Youth for Human Rights and Freedoms
Her regional leadership is further evidenced by her tenure as a former Board Member of the Asia Pacific Network of Sex Workers (APNSW), and her continued engagement as Point Person for both the Sex Work Open Institute—focusing on training, education, and advocacy—and Red Umbrella Films, a platform for storytelling and media advocacy grounded in the lived realities of sex workers.
Across her various platforms, Terou Dawahnee consistently centers the voices of the most marginalized, employing a lens of social justice, intersectionality, and grassroots empowerment to drive transformative change.
