Mapping Research Impact: A Bibliometric Analysis Writing Workshop In-Person
Workshop Overview
This three-day seminar-workshop guides faculty and graduate student researchers through an end-to-end bibliometric study—from topic validation and search design, through data mapping and analysis, to a structured IMRaD manuscript draft ready for refinement toward journal submission.
The workshop is designed for researchers new to bibliometrics who aim to produce a publishable manuscript.
Workshop Details
Date: July 15–17, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Venue: Philippe Jones Lhuillier Conference Room, 14F Henry Sy Sr. Hall, De La Salle University, Manila
Target Participants: GCOE Faculty and Graduate Students
Slots Available: 40 participants
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
• Explain the purpose, types, and key indicators of bibliometric analysis
• Generate performance analysis outputs using Biblioshiny and network maps using VOSviewer
• Interpret bibliometric results and translate them into structured academic writing using IMRaD
• Produce a manuscript draft ready for refinement toward journal submission
Three-Day Workshop Arc
Day 1 (July 15) – From Research Topic to Working Dataset
Participants will engage in topic scoping and validation, research question design, keyword development, Scopus search execution, abstract screening, and data cleaning using Excel.
Day 2 (July 16) – From Working Dataset to Research Maps and Figures
Participants will conduct performance analysis using Biblioshiny and generate co-authorship, co-citation, and keyword co-occurrence maps using VOSviewer, including overlay visualization and figure preparation.
Day 3 (July 17) – From Research Maps to Manuscript Draft
Participants will develop an IMRaD manuscript draft through a guided writing workshop, including a live walkthrough of a demo manuscript, extended writing sessions, target journal identification, and manuscript consultation.
Tools to Be Used
• Scopus – Database searching, retrieval, export, and target journal identification
• Excel – Data cleaning and optional graph customization
• Biblioshiny (R) – Performance analysis (publication trends, top authors, journals, countries)
• VOSviewer – Network analysis (co-authorship, co-citation, keyword co-occurrence, overlay visualization)
Expected Outputs
By the end of the workshop, participants will have:
• A validated research topic and research questions
• A Scopus search string and PRISMA-style retrieval log
• A cleaned bibliometric dataset
• Biblioshiny performance analysis outputs (figures and tables)
• VOSviewer network maps (co-authorship, co-citation, keyword co-occurrence, and overlay visualization)
• A complete IMRaD manuscript draft
• A shortlist of 1–2 target journals
Facilitators
Janice Peñaflor – Associate Director for Learning and Research Support
Efren Torres Jr. – Access and Resource Management Coordinator
Luis Ezra Cruz – Digital Scholarship and Initiatives Coordinator
Notes to Attendees
• Full attendance is expected. This is a three-day, hands-on workshop with a cumulative structure. Topics are designed to build progressively from one session to the next (topic validation → data mapping → manuscript writing); therefore, participants are expected to attend the full duration of the workshop to maximize learning and successfully complete the outputs.
• Bring a laptop. Participants are expected to bring their own laptop for hands-on activities, software use, and manuscript development.
• Prepare a possible research topic or area of interest. Participants are encouraged to come with a tentative research topic, field, or area of interest to facilitate workshop activities and manuscript development.
• Software preparation. Instructions for installing required tools (e.g., Biblioshiny/R and VOSviewer) and accessing databases will be shared prior to the workshop. Participants are encouraged to complete installation before Day 1.
• Active participation is encouraged. Since the workshop includes guided exercises and writing sessions, participants are expected to engage actively in discussions, activities, and consultations.
• Output-oriented workshop. The workshop is designed to help participants produce concrete outputs, including a cleaned dataset, bibliometric maps, and a draft IMRaD manuscript for further refinement toward publication.
